GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has issued an urgent recall of Children’s Panadol Baby Drops syringe due to possible inaccurate placement of the dosing indicator on the syringe. It appears the dosing information on some syringes has been printed further up the body of the syringe than usual, potentially causing parents to give their children more medication than required.  Although the medication is safe, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), said that too much of the drug can be harmful to the liver.

“The harmful effects on the liver can be fatal if they are not detected and treated early”, said the TGA.  “Children may feel well for the first day after an overdose but become very sick after that.”

According to the TGA, if the dosing indicator does not begin from the bottom of the syringe near the tip do not use the syringe to measure out medicine.  Parents who have administered the drug to a child using a faulty dosing syringe are urged seek medical attention immediately, even if the child feels well.  A delay could lead to serious liver damage if left untreated.

If you have purchased Children’s Panadol Baby Drops, check the syringe. If it appears faulty, return it to a nearby pharmacy.
