On August 8, a large group of bicyclists were on their way to Bay City as part of “A One Day Ride Across Michigan” to raise money for the Hope Water Project, which builds wells for fresh drinking water in Kenya. Less than one hour into the ride a participant was struck from behind in a hit-and-run crash. The 50-year-old cyclist sustained massive trauma in the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses said it was a gray or silver pick-up truck that struck the woman, but the incident happened so fast that no one was able to obtain license plate information. Muskegon police said there is no doubt that the truck driver knew s/he had struck something or someone when the incident occurred, judging by the accident scene and the manner in which the cyclist was struck. They believe the truck will have significant damage; parts of it were recovered and collected at the scene.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the crash to call the sheriff’s office at 231-724-6308 or Silent Observer at 231-72-CRIME. Tips can also be texted to 274637 with the prefix MKGTIP before the message. Silent Observer is offering a reward for up to $1,000 for information leading investigators to the driver responsible.

Our sincere condolences go out to the family and whole cycling community.
