Today we honor one of the most influential and iconic leaders of the civil rights movement – Martin Luther King, Jr. This year not only marks the 30th anniversary when the federal government actually began to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a federal holiday, but it also marks the 50th anniversary when Dr. King went to Chicago to highlight the need for open and fair housing.
While today is a day where the court house doors are closed, there is no mail, and many people have the day off work, it should be an important time to reflect on the journey our nation has taken towards freedom and equality. It is also a time to look at the work that still lies ahead and how we can all help. I encourage all my readers to begin by reading (or listening to) Dr. King’s I have a Dream speech, which can be found in both forms by clicking here. Next, honor his legacy and continue his important work by giving back to your community. Lastly, Martin Luther King Jr. left a mountain of lessons in his legacy.
