Researchers at the University of Minnesota have created SafeRoadMaps, which gives motorists detailed information about dangerous roads and sites where the most auto accidents have occurred in the United States using data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Users can enter an address to find out the details of fatal accidents in a particular area. A “Heat Map” gives quick overview of areas with high and low concentration of accidents. There is also the ability to narrow down a search to see the age of the driver, whether speeding or drinking was a factor, and if the driver was wearing a seatbelt. If you were planning a trip, you might rethink your route if you learned several accidents have occurred on a particular roadway within the last year. Parents can use the tool to help new drivers travel safer routes.
