An elderly Utah man was killed in a single vehicle rollover accident. According to the police report, the man veered into the median, but as he tried to turn back onto the road, he overcorrected and rolled the vehicle. The man was not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. Investigators do not know what caused the man to veer off the road, but said alcohol and speeding were not factors. He died at a local hospital.
Could a seat belt have saved this man’s life? While it is true that some auto accidents are so devastating that no amount of safety equipment could have saved the driver or passengers, seatbelt use would almost certainly have saved many. At a minimum, seatbelts can prevent an occupant from being thrown through the windshield or ejected from the vehicle.
Seatbelts continue to be the single most effective protection device in your vehicle. So, why despite the risk of serious injuries or death, do many people still neglect to wear seat belts? I encourage all of my readers to make safety a habit. Even if you survive the impact, it doesn’t mean that your internal organs would survive the blow.
