“According to a new survey commissioned by Ford, most Americans say they consider themselves to be careful drivers but admit they would welcome some extra electronic help when they’re behind the wheel. Even the most attentive of drivers can’t see everything around them at all times or anticipate every hazard on the road.” But, will new vehicle technology prevent auto accidents?
Survey results showed that approximately 60% of respondents blame blind spots for auto accidents or near accidents. The Blind Spot Information alerts drivers of impending traffic while backing out of a parking spot. It uses radar sensors in the rear corners that monitor the spaces beside and behind the vehicle. The Driver Alert System keeps drivers awake with a loud beep if your head drops forward while driving. Yet, some argue that driver-assist technology causes drivers to become lazy and less aware of their surroundings. They rely on the technology – sophisticated cameras, sensors and processors that watch for hazards that a driver may not notice; in some cases, brakes can automatically be applied to avoid an accident.
Although new technology can help, they may not be 100% flawless, as we have witnesses many times with the automotive industry. As new technologies and advancements in vehicles rise, never let it be a substitute for driver awareness. You are ultimately responsible each and every time you get behind the wheel; remain attentive and avoid distractions.
