A Massachusetts fire department dispatcher experienced her worst nightmare when a 9-1-1 call came in reporting a serious auto accident in which the driver was trapped inside the vehicle. The woman said she just knew it was her son. It took firefighters hours to take the vehicle apart piece by piece in order to free the driver. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 21-year-old was driving the family’s Nissan Maxima when he crashed into a utility pole; hours before he had dropped his mom off at work. Although an investigation is ongoing, a witness told police that two vehicles were racing prior to the accident.

Street racing pits one driver against another in a roadway competition. It not only encourages motorists to drive at speeds significantly in excess of those deemed safe for public roadways, it’s also illegal and puts many innocent lives at risk, including. Most vehicles participating in illegal street racing lack the safety equipment necessary to protect the driver in case of an accident. Additionally, drivers do not wear protective gear such as helmets and fire safety suits. Drivers are also not trained to handle a vehicle at high speeds. Because these races are conducted on the open road, innocent viewers and bystanders are also at risk; there are no barriers to protect them.

There is nothing cool or fun about an auto accident or someone losing their life. There is no reason to race on a public road putting your life and others at risk. Don’t let the finish line leave you or others seriously injured or dead.
